Icebreaker activity for On To The Summit : We Reach The Top...

An icebreaker is an activity, game or event that is used to welcome or warm up the conversation among the participants in a meeting, training class, team building session or any other event. any event that requires people to comfortably interact with each other. A facilitator is a person who adds value to a classroom planning session by keeping the group on task and moving in the same direction. An effective icebreaker will warm up the conversation in your classroom session, reinforce the topic of the session, and ensure that the students enjoy their interaction and the session. So the activity should be set in such a way that every student should be an active participant.

The basics to remember while setting an Icebreaker Activity:

  1. Maximum participation is expected.
  2. It should lead your students to the main topic.
  3. There should be clear and complete instructions.
  4. The pictures or any other material which is used for the activity should give a desired message, means there should not be ambiguity in the pictures or any other material.
  5. It should lead to use of creativity of your students.
  6. It should not be time consuming. ( Maximum 20 to 25 minutes )
  7. Finally, always make sure that the instruction given by you are completely assimilated/understood by your students

So, let's start the activity:

Suppose there are 60 students in your class, you can make group of 10 students. Now you have six groups each containing 10 students. It may differ as per your requirement. There are several methods of making groups, e.g. by taking numbers, by using month of date of birth etc.   Ask them to sit in their group separately. Give each group a paper and ask them to decide a writer and a carrier from their group. Writer will write down and a carrier will carry the paper to another group. Give six different topics to the groups. As we are talking about mountaineering I have decided 1) Indian mountains 2) Rivers 3) Flora and fauna 4) Indian mountaineers 5) Objects used in mountaineering 6) Peaks in the world. You may decide as per your requirement/creativity. Make chits of decided topic, mingle them and ask the writer to come and pick a chit. You may explain the topics to the groups. Now you have six groups having their topics and a writer and a carrier. Ask the writer to write down the name of his topic on the paper. After preparation ask them to write down the words related to their topic. Writer will write and other students will help him to add maximum words. Make sure that all the participants are actively involved. Give them only 2-3 mins to write and after a buzzer ask the carrier to pass the paper to the next group. Then ask the groups to add their words related to the topic other than already written on the paper. After five buzzers the same paper will be in the hands of same group. Now ask one of the participants from each group to read the words written on the paper by all the groups. Finally you may explain some of the words from the group or you may ask the group to explain what they have written.

Outputs :
  1. It will boost the creativity of your students.
  2. It will help them to develop the power unity.
  3. All the participants will surely get the chance to interact.
  4. Students will get the enough vocabulary.
  5. It will lead you to the main topic.

Students really enjoy this activity, I have experienced it. Get started best of luck...
